You fall in love with the art of traveling with the freedom that produces the encounter with another culture, the vertigo of leaving your daily life and to expose yourself to smells, tastes, sounds, and other foreign feelings. However, it doesn’t matter if you travel for fun, lifestyle, work or trend, what few people realize is that behind this act, there are so many people involved, who decided to make the art of traveling a profession, a job so that others can enjoy their rest.

Francis Ford Coppola during the WTTC in Buenos Aires, speaks about the relation between hotels, travelling and the art of storytelling

Francis Ford Coppola during the WTTC in Buenos Aires, speaks about the relation between hotels, traveling and the art of storytelling

During the 2018 WTTC Global Summit held in Buenos Aires the past month of April, its President and CEO, Gloria Guevara Manzo, affirmed that 1 out of 10 jobs are supported by travel and tourism, and even though this number seems high, we, the OTA´s can affirm that argument. As simple as it seems, since you start to be interested in a destination by researching on the web, until you return home and share your experiences in social networks, there is a whole chain of promotion, development, production, and logistics that cover from online content, until the start-up of a tourist operation in destination.

Our daily work is nourished by the contribution of professionals in areas as diverse as web programming and design, writing, marketing, advertising, even transporters, tour guides, translators, gastronomy employees, and in cases such as sustainable tourism services, they involve community leaders, artisans, indigenous communities, among other actors of an endless list. It is evident its direct and immediate impact on society, therefore, on the planet.

Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change speaks about the incidence of traveling on climate change

According to data from the UNWTO, in 2017 there were 1,322 million tourists worldwide and it is estimated that by the end of 2018, this figure will increase between 4% and 5%, which positions us, in the words of the directors of the WTTC, in the golden age of travel, which means that traveling is no longer a tendency, it became an essential part of many people’s lives, a source of employment for many.

Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day of your life , said Confucius and likewise, we hope that our work contributes to positivize the tourism and travel, to become more than an industry without chimneys: an industry with vocation of service to the planet and society, in which colleagues, friends, customers and all those who have accompanied us, give back and feel rewarded. For us, without a doubt, being part of this in South America has been and will continue to be the trip of our lives.

Tayrona National Park to close for one month from January 28th http://www.daytours4u.com/en/colombia4u/tayrona-national-park-to-close-for-one-month/ Fri, 26 Jan 2018 20:20:15 +0000 http://www.daytours4u.com/en/?p=10893 In order to allow indigenous communities the time to practice their spiritual rituals, Tayrona National Park will be closed for one month until Feb 28th.

For the four indigenous villages of Tayrona, the Sierra Neveda is the heart of the world and its surroundings are sacred. For this reason, the local tribes have asked the government of Santa Marta to temporary close Tayrona National Park; a request that was accepted, meaning there will be no tourist activities permitted there from January 28th through February 28th.

Tayrona National ParkThere will be no tourist activities in Tayrona National Park between January 28th and February 28th

The pueblos – as they are known in Colombia – of Kogi, Sánha, Kankuama and Ika will have this time to practice their rituals of offering that help to strengthen the spiritual cleansing of the region. A similar exercise was realised in January 2017, and the results were positive according to the authorities and the main representatives of the indigenous communities.

“The petition (…) was accepted on the basis that it is the mission of the state to protect the heritage and natural habitat where the traditional cultures of our country live. In addition, protected areas contribute to sustainable human development, the conservation of biodiversity and representative ecosystems, and the maintenance of environmental goods and services such as water, fauna, flora, and other natural elements”, says the official website of the Colombian National Parks.

The indigenous communities explain that these rituals allow us to recover the harmony of the planet and the balance of the universe, considering that the presence of hurricanes, droughts, and famines across the world are due in large part to human activity, and it is they – the original peoples – that have the responsibility to start repairing it. This balance is achieved through offerings to sacred places, giving back to the Earth what has been taken from it.

At the culmination of these rituals, tourist activities will resume in Tayrona National Park and the spectacular beaches of Neguanje, Playa Cristal, Cañaveral, Arrecifes, among others, will be open once again.

DATES OF INTEREST

For travellers visiting Colombia soon with plans to explore Tayrona National Park between January 28th and February 28th can check out other beach options in Santa Marta with Colombia4u.

On the other hand, those of you planning to visit this wondrous place from March should bear in mind that tickets to Tayrona can be paid online.

Foreigner tax is US$10 and is paid directly at the park entrance.

The survivors of The Andes Tragedy-a plane crash that occurred in the province of Mendoza, Argentina, on October 13, 1972 – will undertake a new expedition to the place where the events occurred 46 years ago, with the aim of paying tribute to the victims. The organizers of the activity, which will be held on 23, 24 and 25 February, have opened a call to add more expeditionists who wish to share this unique experience with the protagonists of the event.

The expedition will arrive to the place where the remains of the plane are located / Source

Spaces are limited and only 40 people will take part in this expedition that will take Carlitos Páez, a survivor of the tragedy, and his family on the last trip they will make to this place. Páez is one of the most well-known faces of this tragedy, as he is the son of the renowned Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró (1923 – 2014), whose most emblematic work in Punta del Este is the famous Casapueblo.

Those who wish to participate in this experience to the Cordillera should know that physical conditioning is important. While there is no technical requirement, it is recommended to train before the departure date, as the final section includes a 12-hour walk between the beginning and the end point. Due to geographical and climatic difficulties it is essential to have all the mountain gear and equipment.

A story of survival

On Friday, October 13, 1972, an Uruguayan Air Force plane left Montevideo with 45 people on board and crashed in the mysterious Andes Mountain Range. The group was made up of young rugby players, their friends and relatives. Survivors of the impact were trapped by the snow-capped mountains at almost 4,000 meters of altitude, without enough food, water, adequate clothing and bearing temperatures below freezing.

To survive, they organized themselves under the name of the “Snow Society” and managed to overcome 72 days of hunger, pain and despair. One of the most well-known and highlighted facts by the tabloid press was the survivor’s decision to eat the flesh of the deceased bodies so that they wouldn’t die of starvation.

Finally two of the survivors managed to cross the mountain range on foot that separated them from the Chilean valley and after walking for 10 days, they met a livestock herder, Sergio Catalán, who assisted them and found a rescue group.

MICE Tourism in Brazil: Samba and exuberance

Brazil is South America’s most popular business destination. According to ABEOC Brazil (Brazilian Association of Events Companies), In Brazil, there are about 10,000 venues at your disposal in order to organise your events. The most impressive cities being São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

In Rio there are countless activities available: must-do touristic activities, such as seeing Christ the Redeemer and not to mention Rio’s cultural and gastronomical experiences, adaptable to every taste. Football is also an important part of the carioca ( from Rio de Janeiro) culture. If you organise a business trip to this city, you must include the magical Tijuca Rainforest jeep tour and some samba classes in order to really get to the heart of this city and feel as if you were part of Rio’s legendery Carnival.

São Paulo, South America’s business capital, offers a lot of thematic guided tours – the perfect addition if you are visiting the city on business. A perfect example is the one-day visit to the beautiful sea-side town of Santos & Guarujá. Or you could discover the more traditional Brazilian culture with a trip to Embu das Artes. Since São Paulo is one of the continent’s most popular tourist destinations, many airlines stopover  in Guarulhos Airport. If that is the case, the São Paulo Layover Tour is the perfect opportunity to discover the best of the city in 6 or 8 hours.

MICE tourism in Argentina: Tango, football and culture

In 2013, ICCA (International Congresses and Conventions Association) announced that Argentina ranked 19th in the world ranking of international events reception. This country makes for a great choice for business tourism in South America, especially the cosmopolitan capital, Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires is the perfect destination for a MICE event: the passionate and colorful tango shows, the football culture and the exquisite gastronomy it offers all prove for an unforgettable. After a long meeting or congress you could wipe off the cobwebs and enjoy the fresh air with the boat trip across the Río de la Plata and the countless cultural activities that will allow you to discover every corner of the city.

Argentina is also the eighth largest country in the world, so there are endless regions to visit in Argentina. Among them the classical Andean landscapes of Salta, the viticultural region of Mendoza, the abundant nature of Iguazú  and the splendid sights of Bariloche.

Buenos Aires lives to the rhythm of tango, be sure not to miss out on the best shows

MICE Tourism in Chile: Wine and adventure

Chile, apart from being a stable and safe country, has considerably invested in its tourism infrastructure. Besides, its geograpical position makes it the perfect destination for business tourists. Santiago, the capital, and its surroundings offer an ample range of activities from the classical wine tours and  famous cellars to adventurous excursions through the Andes.

A few hours away from Santiago are the beautiful cities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar – and they are must-see destinations in Chile. The guided tours in the Litoral Central will undoubtedly be the best experience you will have during your business trip to Chile. Definitely a great candidate for any MICE events in South America.

MICE Tourism in Uruguay: Gastronomy and nature

Uruguay has about 3.4 million inhabitants and there are more than 3.6 million tourists that visit the country each year. This statistics show the importance of tourism in this small South American nation. Uruguay is a major business destination due to its intimate nature and beautiful natural landscapes.

Less than a year ago the impressive Convention Centre in Punta del Este was built, and has drawn in thousands of businessmen and women to this already famous seaside town. This is an ideal opportunity to take a city tour through the most important intrest points and take the day to know the charming town, Cabo Polonio.

Montevideo, boasts the most beautiful tango shows and winery tours in Uruguay, not to mention unmissable breweries. You also should take advantage of your stay in Uruguay and visit the historical city of Colonia del Sacramento, especially if you have time to cross the River Plate to go to Buenos Aires.

Uruguay is known for its modern infrastructure in Punta del Este and the capital Montevideo which meets the expectations of even the most demanding travellers / Source: Daytours4u

MICE Tourism in Colombia: Beaches, mountains and amusement

Colombia never not stops growing, especially as far as corporate tourism is concerned. Superclasico Boca vs River in Argentina

Superclasico Boca vs River

The 14th of May 2017 is played the Superclasico of Boca vs River at the Bombonera Stadium / Source

The Superclásico of Argentina – one of the most famous throughout the world – is the game between the Club Atlético Boca Juniors and the Club Atlético River Plate.  Boca plays at “La Bombonera” and has achieved a lot since its creation: they won the record of consecutive years played in the Premier League and 66 official titles in national and international championships. As for River’s stadium, it is called “El Monumental” and is the biggest in Argentina. River has won 63 official titles and won more games in the Argentine First Division than any other club.

The two teams come from the same neighbourhood in Buenos Aires, “La Boca”, and their rivalry began at the beginning of the twentieth century. From the very beginning the competition between the two teams was so tight that they became legendary rivals making this superclasico a  totally unique experience. It is so popular that The Telegraph – on May 2016 – ranked River and Boca first in their list of 25 biggest club rivalries in the world.

Even during the summer,  Boca and River play each other in a superclasico in the “Torneo de Verano” (Summer championship) in Mar del Plata, a traditional summer holiday destination for Argentinians. You cannot survive an entire summer without football!

Travelling tip: Be prepared as in Argentina, football is a complicated event, especially at La Bombonera. It can be very difficult to buy tickets for the games and it can be tricky entering and finding your way around the stadium.

Next Boca-River game: Sunday, 14th May of 2017 at La Bombonera

Uruguayan Clasico Nacional vs Peñarol

The clasico of Uruguay will be played on Wednesday 5th of April / Source

Uruguay’s superclasico is  between Club Nacional de Football and Club Atlético Peñarol. If you go to the Gran Parque Central – Nacional’s stadium – and Campeón del Siglo – Peñarol’s home stadium – you will instantly become part of their colourfull celebration, stood amongst the “hinchas” euphorically singing throughout the game. Nacional has won 155 official national and international titles while Peñarol is considered Best Continental Club of the XXth Century in South America by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).

The rivalry between these two legendary teams dates back to the creation of the two clubs in the late XIXth century. Peñarol players were initially immigrants from England whereas Nacional players were exclusively Creole (born in South America). This superclasico derby is considered the oldest rivalry in the world – excluding the United Kingdom – and usually takes places in the magnificent Estadio Centenario, known for hosting the first World Cup in 1930.

Of the 528 clasicos played between Peñarol and Nacional, Peñarol has won more so far.

Travelling tip: If you coming from abroad, you should book a football tour with tickets and transport to the stadium included. This way you can be guided by a local company and peacefully enjoy your football experience.

Next game: Nacional – Peñarol, Wednesday, 5th April of 2017 in the Estadio Centenario.

Fla-Flu Derbie or Flamengo vs Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro

Every game is a true national event, full of colours and emotions / Source

The rivalrly between Rio’s Clube de Regatas do Flamengo and Fluminense Football Club, is commonly known as Fla-Flu. Fla-Flu is how this Rio de Janeiro clasico is commonly called. Every game is a true national event and every “hincha” gets as emotional as if that game were their last.

The rivalry between Flamengo and Fluminense dates back to 1911 when some Fluminense’s players abandoned the club and joined Flamengo. However, some Brazilians football experts claim that this is a social class rivalry: Fluminense is considered a football club from the high class whereas the fans of Flamengo are considered as being part of the popular classes.

The clasico Fla-Flu was played the 2nd of April and ended with a tie (1-1)

Atlético Nacional vs Millonarios Derbie en Colombia

The clasico of Bogota is a spectacle full of football and colours / Source

Of all the South American derbies described so far, the one between the Azul & Blanco Millonarios Fútbol Club S. A. and the Atlético Nacional S.A is the most recent. The others originate back to the late XIXth century or the early XXth whereas the rivalry between Millonarios and Nacional began in the 1980’s.

The antagonism began with Ricardo “Chico” Pérez, who first signed for Millonarios and then, only a few days later, for Nacional. If this triggered the rivalry, the quality of both clubs on the “cancha” (field) is what turned this game into a true South American superclasico derby. So far, Millonarios won 102 clasicos and Nacional 75; there were 75 ties.

Next game: Nacional – Millonarios, Friday, 7th of April of 2017 in the Estadio El Campín de Bogotá.

  • Buy your tickets from registered agencies or a package deal with transport and guide included from tourism agencies. This might result in being more expensive, but this is the only way to be sure you can safely see the game without having to worry.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and leave all unnecessary valuables at the hotel. You can take a camera to the stadium, but it should be small enough to go unnoticed.

LGBT tourismColombia is an emerging travel destination for the LGBT community

“For us, it is recognition of the work carried out by numerous businessmen and women to satisfy, with excellence, the existing demand in this segment of tourism, and the way that Colombian society is travelling in favour of equality of rights” said Felipe Jaramillo, the President of ProColombia, at Fitur Gay, which took place between January 18th and January 22nd in Madrid, Spain. This accolade indeed acknowledges the efforts that Colombia has made in terms of equality, particularly in its legislation

Fitur Gay is backed by a host of major global institutions, including the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, while Diversity Consulting International is a consultancy firm that provides advice and services to companies that intend to venture into the LGBT market.

Tourism in Colombia is set to strengthen considerably through this recognition and indeed other awards it has received recently, the most notable of which came at the 2016 World Travel Awards where Medellín was voted South America’s Leading City Break Destination.
