The Caipirihna, meaning “little drink” in Portuguese, is Brazil’s national drink and is made using Cachaça, the country’s most common distilled alcoholic beverage, which the Brazilians get through a staggering 200 million litres of each year. Cachaça has become an integral part of Brazilian culture and now ranks alongside football, carnival and samba as Brazil’s most significant national icons. On hot summer days in Rio, you can either choose to refresh yourself by going for a dip in the Atlantic Ocean, or by making the perfect Caipirinha to sip on while basking in the glorious rays of sunshine- mmm…

Caipirinha Making the perfect Caipirinha requires just four ingredients / source

To go about making the perfect Caipirinha, you need the following ingredients:

  • One good-sized lime
  • 2 tbsps fine sugar
  • Cachaça
  • Ice

Making the perfect Caipirinha can be accomplished using these five basic steps:

  1. Cut the lime lengthwise into four wedges and place in a glass
  2. Pour two tablespoons of sugar over the lime wedges and mash with a muddler
  3. Fill the rest of the glass with ice and pour in two shots of cachaca
  4. Cover the glass with a shaker and shake for 5-10 seconds
  5. Garnish with a slice of lime and serve

If you’re feeling lazy and aren’t in the mood to make your own Caipirinha, you can always leave the hard work to someone else. A couple of great places to try freshly-prepared Caipirinhas in Rio de Janeiro are Quiosque do Português, where you can find classic Caipirinhas as well as Caipirinhas with a unique twist, and Academia da Cachaça, which serves sweet, indulgent alternatives to the classic drink, such as the passion-fruit Caipirinha with real fruit floating inside.
