Itinerary
The Excursion to El Chaltén from El Calafate is highly recommended for all those visitors who like to go hiking. El Chaltén is a town located 220 kilometers from El Calafate and ideal to perform various outdoor activities and mountain sports. There is no better place to hike than El Chaltén, the National Capital of Trekking.
This Excursion to El Chaltén from El Calafate starts at 7:00 am when we leave the hotel heading East along 30 kilometers until we reach the mythical Route 40. We will make several stops at the head of Lago Argentino and enjoy the view of the largest lake in Argentina and the Cordillera de los Andes. After crossing the river Santa Cruz and La Leona, we will arrive at the hotel to learn about the history of the place in the small museum, have a snack and rest from this first part of the walk. We then take the road again making another stop at the Glaciar Viedma viewpoint from where we will enjoy a beautiful view of the glacier, typical nearby estancias and the emblematic Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre.
After 220 kilometers, you will arrive to El Chalten, our trekking guides will advise you to choose the route that you like the most taking into account your physical condition, and the estimated time of the hike, you will also receive lunch to enjoy at any time along the way.
After recharging energy and resting for a while, we will start our way back to El Calafate.

- Weather alert: The climate in Southern Patagonia can change radically several times a day. Please bring the right clothes: bring sunglasses to protect your eyes from the intense reflection of the glacier and the lake. In addition, for the skin, it is important a good protective cream with a sun filter, clothing and personal equipment (coat, raincoat, scarf, gloves, and appropriate footwear).
- Food alert: Lunch has vegetarian, coeliac and vegan options, but must be requested at the time of booking.
- Guide language extra: The guides on the regular excursions are Spanish/English. In case of requesting a guide in another language, we can add them with an additional.
- Special date alert: From April 1st to September 30, the tour departs at 08:15 am on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and, Sunday.
