Itinerary Day in Palenque
San Basilio de Palenque is the first independent city of America, declared sovereign in 1713. The name “Palenque” refers to the gates erected by black slaves that escaped from the spanish during the colonial period. It was declared Cultural Heritage by UNESCO IN 2005.
Located approximately an hour and a half south of Cartagena, San Basilio de Palenque is waiting for you, an african spot in Colombia. In this place you will find the african heritage from the times of colonial slavery, you will discover the bantú language, ritual dances, wood, cement and straw houses, and inspiring stories that will change your outlook on life.
Once you are there, you will chat with a native that, in a particular and friendly way, will welcome you and will present you the four pillars that define the culture of his people: the “creole” language, the music, the cooking and the religion.
On this tour you will also have the opportunity to see the house of the boxing world champion: Antonio Cervantes Reyes, better known as «Kid Pambelé», and the house of the legendary musician Rafael Cassiani.You will also visit Plaza Central that proudly exhibits the statue of Bioho Benkos, the founder of Palenque and predecessor of freeing slave labour in Cartagena, as well as the cemetery and the Palace of Culture.
