Itinéraire du circuit Chinchero Maras et Moray

In this tour with Daytours4u we will take you through some of the most emblematic places of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Discover all the magic of Cusco in the paths of Chinchero, the agricultural terraces of Maray and the salt mines of Maras.

Maras Tour

After hotel pick-up, you will leave Cusco at 9:00 am. The first stop of this fascinating itinerary is the traditional village of Chinchero, we will visit a textile workshop to learn about ancestral dyeing techniques and fibers for the elaboration of handmade textiles by expert artisans.

Then we will go to the famous salt mines of Maras, where you can admire these salt mines that show a strange and beautiful spectacle. Located on an open hill above the Urubamba Valley, there is a natural stream of salt water running underground.

A knowledgeable guide will teach you the secrets of Andean culture. How, in pre-Inca times, its inhabitants evaporated the salt water from this stream to obtain the salt that is left behind.

The guide will also explain this whole process. The highly salty water emerges in a spring, the flow is then directed in an intricate system of tiny canals constructed so that the water gradually runs down into the several hundred ancient ponds and terraces. This process of evaporation occurs thanks to a natural process, where water that is exposed to the sun leaves salt in the earth.

Moray Tour

The last part of our Chinchero Maras and Moray Tour itinerary starts immediately after visiting the salt mines near Maras.

We will head to the ruins of Moray, which are composed of three coliseums that are believed to have been used by the Incas as a kind of open-air cultivation laboratory.

  • The coliseums consist of several huge circular depressions in terraces, the largest of which is about 30 meters (98 feet) deep.

Visit these terraces which are arranged in concentric circles and are reminiscent of an ancient Greek theater. After the tour we will return to Cusco.
