Are you travelling to Argentina between November and March? Maybe you are asking yourself: Does Argentina have beaches? Then this post could come in very handy! Summer in Argentina is, on the one hand, a great time to visit Argentina’s beautiful cities: most Argentinians are away holidaying in the countryside or along the coast and the urban centers are quiet and almost deserted, making for the perfect sightseeing conditions. However, as temperatures rise, city centres can get swelteringly hot and you might find yourself longing for a beach to cool off on.  In this article, we recommend 4 great beaches to visit in Argentina, including Las Grutas, the best beach vacation spot in Patagonia.

Argentina has a wide range of beaches, which are found all down the eastern side of the country along the beautiful Atlantic coast. From highly urbanised, 24-hour party resorts, to chic boutique spa retreats and wild, untouched stretches of coastline, Argentina’s beaches have something for everyone.

1- Mar del Plata - Exciting beach vacation

If you ask anyone about beaches in Argentina, there’s no doubt Mar del Plata will come up, since it is one of the most famous beaches in Argentina. In fact, it’s Argentina’s largest and oldest beach resort (built in 1874) and is hugely popular with local and foreign tourists alike. Surrounded by rolling hills, its beaches stretch along 17km of coastline, but although this may sound peaceful, if you’re looking for a tranquil escape to the beach, this might not be the best option for you. Mar del Plata is a lively coastal town and the place to be if you’re looking for an exciting beach vacation. The resorts are heavily urbanised, meaning there is plenty of choice for accommodation, restaurants, and nightlife. There’s no shortage of things to do: From golfing, scuba diving, boat trips, and fishing to fun days out with the kids.

2- Pinamar and Cariló - Popular family vacation

Pinamar and Carilo are two of the most beautiful Argentina beaches resorts. Pinamar offers a beautiful combination of beaches and stunning pine forests. It’s a popular family vacation spot for porteños (Buenos Aires residents) as it’s only a three-hour drive from the capital. It offers a great, less crowded alternative to the nearby Mar del Plata and is renowned for being slightly more exclusive: there are boutique hotels, luxurious restaurants, and spas along its coastline. If you are travelling with children or looking for relaxation, this beach resort is the best choice!

Cariló lies right next to Pinamar, and with its picturesque forest cabins and beautifully maintained beaches, a vacation here is a treat that doesn’t come cheap. However, if luxury is what you’re after, a stay in Cariló, rubbing shoulders with Argentina’s elite, might just be what you’re after.

Travel Tip: The nearby Miramar, on the other hand, is a lot more down to earth and quieter. This pretty town is a popular cycling destination in Argentina and makes for a good choice for families as it is well facilitated, calm, attractive and safe.

3- Las Grutas - best beach vacation spots in Patagonia

Las Grutas is located further south, down Argentina’s Atlantic coast, in Patagonia . It is slightly less known, however, no doubt becoming one of the best beach vacation spots in Argentina because of its unspoiled location. The beaches in Las Grutas have some of the purest white sand and warmest waters you'll find along the coastline of Argentina. Another great thing about Las Grutas is that it is located close to the town of San Antonio Oeste, which is a connection point for those visiting Puerto Madryn, one of Argentina’s and Patagonia’s main tourist destinations. If you prefer a quieter getaway, to a yet untouched coastline, then Las Grutas is the beach for you. Unlike the coast closer to Buenos Aires, the cliffside beaches of the Río Negro province in Patagonia appeal to a different kind of crowd.

Pehuén Có is the best natural beach in Argentina and you’re unlikely to come across tourists, buildings or anything other than sandy coastlines. Located 84 km east of the important port of Bahía Blanca, this part of the Argentine coast is ideal for intrepid travellers who are looking for a no-frills beach experience.
