Exciting 4x4 route: São Luís and Fortaleza

The Exciting 4x4 Route package will explore the main cities of São Luis and Fortaleza. On this trip, you will be able to see the beauties that surround Lençóis Maranhenses, Jericoacoara and Atins. 

Enjoy the cities and all their culture, walk through the dunes, travel by buggy and cool off in the lake of the Parnaíba Delta River, besides enjoying the crystal clear lagoons.

Day 1 Departure from São Luis to Barreirinhas

Early in the morning (around 7 am), we will depart on a 4-hour drive to Barreirinhas, the gateway for tourism in Maranhão located on the banks of the Preguiças River. 

Then we will go to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, located near the city, is a rare jewel, surrounded by magnificent dunes sculpted by nature and that, from March to September, hundreds of lakes formed by the rainwater that falls in the season decorate the landscape of this park. 

The tour starts in a 4x4 vehicle to reach the heart of the park, where we will walk through the circuit of the blue lagoon, where you can bathe in the place and contemplate a beautiful sunset on the dunes.

The return from Barreirinhas will be around 7 pm. Afterwards you can enjoy the evening strolling through the quiet streets of the city or simply by the waters of the river enjoying a delicious pizza in the restaurants of the city. Overnight in Barreirinhas. 

Day 2: Boat trip on the Preguiças River and departure to Atins. 

In the morning, around 8:30 am, we will depart on a boat excursion along the majestic Preguiças River, of calm waters, where we will have a view of the bayous of the shore (a kind of water mass formed by ancient rivers), the mangroves (a natural nursery for fauna), the buritis, the Juçara trees (provide the famous açaí) and the tucunzeiros (species of palm trees used in the production of brandy), and we will also see animals such as herons.

The communities of VASSOURAS, MANDACARU and ATINS

The first stop we will make is in the community of Vassouras, also known as the small Lençois, a place where we can enjoy a delicious coconut water and interact with the monkeys that live there; then we will go to Mandacaru, a small fishing village where we will climb 160 steps that make up the lighthouse of Mandacaru to contemplate the view of the dunes, the river, the ocean and the typical vegetation; then we will visit Caburé, an arm of dunes located between the river and the sea. At the end of the day we will go to the village of Atins to spend the night.

Day 3: Visit to Rincón de Atins 

At 9 am we will leave by 4x4 car to the Canto de Atins. Located in this place we will be able to walk along the beautiful dunes of the park and refresh ourselves in the waters of the lagoons that are formed only during the rainy seasons. After this activity, we will stop at the Luzia or Antonio restaurants for lunch (not included) and try the famous grilled shrimp.

We will return to the hotel to spend the night in Atins.

Day 4: The Parnaíba Delta 

During this day we will tour the Parnaíba Delta and have a day full of adventures. 

After breakfast, we will depart by boat to reach the village of Caburé, then we will board a 4x4 vehicle to the city of Tutoia, passing through a road with 15 km of deserted beaches, 5 km of beautiful dunes and more than 10 km of off-road tracks until we reach the small village of Paulino Neves, where we will continue for another 30 km of paved road to our destination.

Upon arrival, we will board a boat to cross the Parnaíba Delta, a river that crosses the states of Maranhão and Piauí. We will cross several river beds formed by streams where we will have the opportunity to see a demonstration of crab fishing and also visit some fish cages used by the local population. On this boat ride we will pass in front of São Bernardo Island, where we will see a small church in the middle of nowhere and finish the tour at Morro do Meio, where you can swim in the waters of Parnaíba.

Lunch (not included) will take place on one of the Delta islands, according to the guide/driver.

At the end of the day we will arrive at the port of Tatus within the city of Parnaíba and go to an inn for the night.

Day 5: Road to Jericoacoara

After breakfast, we will go by 4x4 to Jericoacoara, where there will be a panoramic tour of nearby places such as Camocim, Love Island, Tatajuba, Guriú and Mangue Seco beaches. On the way, we will pass by dunes, ferry crossings and have an important view of several deserted beaches. Afterwards you will have the possibility to have lunch on the road (not included).

At the end of this activity we will stay at the Jericoacoara Pousada for the night.

Day 6: Buggy ride 

After breakfast, we will leave in a buggy, a vehicle suitable for crossing the dunes, for the Perez Tree. This is a tree that grew under the influence of the winds, where we will make our first stop for photos. 

Inside the Jericoacoara National Park, we can visit the seasonal lagoons that are formed during the rainy season, we will visit the Blue Lagoon where you can swim and continue to the Paradise Lagoon for lunch and bathe in crystal clear waters.

We will return to the lodge to spend the night in Jericoacoara.

Day 7: End of the trip

On the last day of the itinerary we will go by 4x4 vehicle to the city of Fortaleza, which will take us about 4 hours and a half to finish this journey at the hotel or airport.
