Why is the Perito Moreno Glacier special?

There are many reasons to admire and highlight the qualities of the glacier. First of all, the Perito Moreno is one of the few glaciers in the world that is not receding, in fact, it is advancing. Scientists are not exactly sure why this is happening, although the most popular idea states that it is due to its steep angle. In addition, because of the spectacular view it offers, the Perito Moreno glacier is considered the eighth wonder of the world.

Thirdly, 90% of the planet's freshwater is found in glacial areas and then in Antarctica and Greenland. This corresponds to the fact that it is one of the most important drinking water reserves in the world.

What to pack for the minitrekking excursion in Perito Moreno?

Here we share with you some items that will be useful to bring when visiting El Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park:

  •  Sport shoes: preferably if you are glacier trekking.
  • Warm jacket for the cold: It's going to be cold, so a parka will come in handy. We are fans of compact quilted jackets that can be compressed into a small pack for easy packing.
  •  Sunscreen . It's cold, but if it's bright and sunny, don't forget your sunscreen. It can be deceiving when it feels cold air and you don't notice you're getting sunburned. You can always sport a nice cap to cover your face.
  •  Sunglasses: This is good to have, especially when you're on the ice, as the surface can reflect the sunlight and make it quite blinding.
  •  Portable charger: If you are taking pictures with your phone, bring a portable charger to make sure your phone has extra power. If you're using a camera, it will be good to bring a spare battery, because we assure you that you won't stop taking pictures.
  •  Long pants: It is advisable to bring adjustable pants when there is an excursion in the middle of nature.
  •  Thermal clothing: Depending on how tolerant you are to cold and the season you are visiting, thermal clothing may be an option.
  • Gloves: Likewise, you may want to bring some gloves if you are susceptible to the cold. You will use them mainly while on the glacier.

Try not to bring valuables that you cannot carry with you, especially if you are trekking on the glacier. Remember that there is no guarantee if there will be security lockers. You may have to stack your bags and leave them somewhere. Without a doubt, this excursion will be one of the highlights of your travels in Patagonia!
